The insides of Wyatt’s eyelids felt like sandpaper. He was fairly sure that, although he’d taken a shower and laid down in bed, he hadn’t actually slept.

Nope, instead, he’d just spent all day kicking himself for being so stupid.

Of course, he wasn’t sure what he’d been stupid about.

Stupid because he’d told Artie about the bet?

No, she would’ve eventually found out, and it was better to have come from him, right?

Stupid because he didn’t try harder to explain the whole mess?

Or stupid because he’d taken the bet in the first place?

Sighing, he scrubbed his hand over his face and shuffled into the stables. He wasn’t certain what had possessed him to check on Moonbeam—it wasn’t as if Jim was going to leave her alone or anything—but he’d been out walking, trying to clear his head for the last hour anyhow.

“Hiya, Wyatt.” Seth, Jim’s right-hand men, gave him a friendly nod. “You’re not at the picnic?”

Picnic?

Wondering why his brain didn’t seem to be firing on all cylinders, Wyatt shook his head. “Just, uh, I just came to check on the foals.”

With a smile, Seth jerked his head toward Moonbeam’s stall. He tipped his chair back against the wall and smiled happily.

“They’re doing just fine, but I think they’re all resting right now. I just took a peek a few minutes ago.”

Wyatt poked his head in, and sure enough, the three animals looked nice and cozy. And darned cute. He nodded his thanks to Seth.

But before he left—still not sure where he was heading—he turned back. “Uh…picnic?”

The other man raised a brow. “Sure. Instead of your usual Sunday dinner tonight, Mr. Cauldron—I mean, your grandfather—declared a celebration and invited the entire ranch, seems like. Jim didn’t want to leave Moonbeam, but his wife told him if he didn’t go, Tessa wouldn’t make her famous lemonade, which would upset your grandfather, and—” Chuckling, he shook his head, then continued in his Southern drawl. “Well, it doesn’t matter. I told Jim I’d stand guard, just as long as he brings me one of Griselda’s cupcakes. I hear she’s been baking all day!”

Wyatt fumbled to pull his phone out of his back pocket. Oh, hell, there were at least thirty unread notifications. He must’ve put it on silent during his attempt at taking a nap and forgotten about it.

Scrolling through the texts, he saw Seth was right. Sometimes, when Pops really wanted to celebrate something, he threw a big shindig like this, instead of their usual weekly dinner, and invited the “ranch family,” as he called the hands and their families.

But…

With a sigh, Wyatt accepted the truth. He had no desire to go celebrate anything tonight. He nodded his thanks to Seth. “Have a good night.”

The good-natured man waved cheerfully and went back to his crossword puzzle.

And Wyatt, with nothing better to do, and the sun already sinking low in the west, shuffled back toward his lonely little apartment over his office at the racetrack.

In his hand, the phone still buzzed occasionally, as his family sent texts back and forth, but he couldn’t bear to read them.
