The insides of Wyattâs eyelids felt like sandpaper. He was fairly sure that, although heâd taken a shower and laid down in bed, he hadnât actually slept.
Nope, instead, heâd just spent all day kicking himself for being so stupid.
Of course, he wasnât sure what heâd been stupid about.
Stupid because heâd told Artie about the bet?
No, she wouldâve eventually found out, and it was better to have come from him, right?
Stupid because he didnât try harder to explain the whole mess?
Or stupid because heâd taken the bet in the first place?
Sighing, he scrubbed his hand over his face and shuffled into the stables. He wasnât certain what had possessed him to check on Moonbeamâit wasnât as if Jim was going to leave her alone or anythingâbut heâd been out walking, trying to clear his head for the last hour anyhow.
âHiya, Wyatt.â Seth, Jimâs right-hand men, gave him a friendly nod. âYouâre not at the picnic?â
Picnic?
Wondering why his brain didnât seem to be firing on all cylinders, Wyatt shook his head. âJust, uh, I just came to check on the foals.â
With a smile, Seth jerked his head toward Moonbeamâs stall. He tipped his chair back against the wall and smiled happily.
âTheyâre doing just fine, but I think theyâre all resting right now. I just took a peek a few minutes ago.â
Wyatt poked his head in, and sure enough, the three animals looked nice and cozy. And darned cute. He nodded his thanks to Seth.
But before he leftâstill not sure where he was headingâhe turned back. âUhâ¦picnic?â
The other man raised a brow. âSure. Instead of your usual Sunday dinner tonight, Mr. CauldronâI mean, your grandfatherâdeclared a celebration and invited the entire ranch, seems like. Jim didnât want to leave Moonbeam, but his wife told him if he didnât go, Tessa wouldnât make her famous lemonade, which would upset your grandfather, andââ Chuckling, he shook his head, then continued in his Southern drawl. âWell, it doesnât matter. I told Jim Iâd stand guard, just as long as he brings me one of Griseldaâs cupcakes. I hear sheâs been baking all day!â
Wyatt fumbled to pull his phone out of his back pocket. Oh, hell, there were at least thirty unread notifications. He mustâve put it on silent during his attempt at taking a nap and forgotten about it.
Scrolling through the texts, he saw Seth was right. Sometimes, when Pops really wanted to celebrate something, he threw a big shindig like this, instead of their usual weekly dinner, and invited the âranch family,â as he called the hands and their families.
Butâ¦
With a sigh, Wyatt accepted the truth. He had no desire to go celebrate anything tonight. He nodded his thanks to Seth. âHave a good night.â
The good-natured man waved cheerfully and went back to his crossword puzzle.
And Wyatt, with nothing better to do, and the sun already sinking low in the west, shuffled back toward his lonely little apartment over his office at the racetrack.
In his hand, the phone still buzzed occasionally, as his family sent texts back and forth, but he couldnât bear to read them.
